Robyn's Environmental Project & Reports

Since the start of the Industrial Age in the late 1700s, technology and industry have grown at an exponential rate. Alas, this growth has been accompanied by an increase in the amount of waste we produce and damage we do to the environment. Statistics from the National Waste Information Baseline Report show that South Africa can generate 1,308,637 tonnes of plastic waste in only a year. Of this, less than 20% is recycled. In South Africa, as around the rest of the world, plastic refuse is building up, despoiling our planet. Purchase Via

Facts about plastic

In South Africa alone, every hour, nearly 250 000 plastic bottles are dumped
Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60W bulb for up to 6 hours.
Plastic bottles account for up to 50% of recyclable waste in our dumps.
It takes about 450 years for a single plastic bottle to break down in the ground! In a landfill, this can increase to 700 years.
It takes about 25 recycled plastic drinks bottles to make one fleece jacket.
Each year, plastic waste in our oceans kills an estimated 1 000 000 sea creatures.

Plastic has started accumulating in our oceans.
Over the last few years, we've witnessed the birth of these floating 'islands' of trash.
